On Friday, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi called on the United Kingdom to adhere to the “One-China” principle, in light of the escalating diplomatic tensions between Beijing and Tokyo regarding Taiwan.
The One-China principle maintains that both sides of the Taiwan Strait are part of one nation, a stance that is not accepted by the government in Taipei.
During a meeting in Beijing with Jonathan Powell, Britain’s National Security Adviser, Wang emphasized the necessity of sustaining strategic communication and improving “necessary coordination” between China and the UK.
According to a statement from a Chinese ministry, the two officials also addressed the situation in Ukraine.
