Several individuals lost their lives and sustained injuries when a bus collided with a bus stop in central Stockholm on Friday, according to Swedish police, who noted that there was no evidence suggesting it was an attack.
The incident resulted in six casualties, as reported by a spokesperson for Stockholm’s rescue services, who did not disclose the specific numbers of fatalities or injuries. The spokesperson confirmed that there were no passengers aboard the bus at the time of the incident.
“This is being treated as involuntary manslaughter. The bus driver has been detained, which is standard procedure in such cases,” stated a police spokesperson, reiterating that there was no indication of an attack.
Authorities indicated that they would refrain from commenting on the number, gender, or ages of the deceased or injured individuals.
Police, rescue teams, and ambulances were actively engaged at the scene, as reported by the police.
A photograph on the website of daily Aftonbladet depicted emergency services at the location, surrounding a blue double-decker bus, with debris scattered around the vehicle.
The incident took place in proximity to the Royal Institute of Technology university, according to police reports.
“We do not yet understand the cause of this incident, but my thoughts are primarily with those affected and their families at this moment,” expressed Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson in a post on X.
