A shallow magnitude-6.5 earthquake occurred off the coast of the French overseas territory of Guadeloupe, according to US seismologists, with no immediate reports of damages or injuries from authorities.
The US Geological Survey indicated that the epicenter of the quake was located approximately 160 kilometers (100 miles) east of the Caribbean island at a depth of nine kilometers around 8:30 am (1230 GMT).
Following the initial tremor, authorities issued a brief tsunami warning, which was succeeded by several strong aftershocks.
AFP reporters noted that they experienced the tremors in the French overseas territories of Guadeloupe and Martinique.
The Caribbean region is known for its high seismic activity.
In 2010, a devastating magnitude-7.0 earthquake struck Haiti, resulting in the deaths of over 200,000 individuals.
