A 69-year-old Japanese tourist has tragically passed away after falling approximately seven meters from the outer wall of the Pantheon in Rome late Friday night, as reported by local authorities.
The individual, whose name has not been disclosed, was allegedly seated on the historic monument’s wall when he was suddenly struck by an illness, leading him to lose his balance and tumble into the moat surrounding the Pantheon. Rescuers had to open a gate on Via della Palombella to access the man, who was declared dead at the scene.
The incident was first reported by the Italian news agency Ansa. Authorities have initiated an investigation into this unfortunate event.
The deceased was in the city with his daughter, who informed the police that her father had fallen after experiencing a sudden health crisis. The ancient wall where the incident took place is commonly utilized by tourists as a resting point during their sightseeing activities.
The Pantheon, constructed by Emperor Hadrian, stands as one of Italy’s most frequented attractions, drawing over four million visitors in 2024. This incident is one of several tourist-related tragedies in Rome this year, following the death of a Spanish woman who fell near the Spanish Steps in March.
