Britain’s Prince Andrew announced on Friday that he would relinquish his title of Duke of York after enduring years of criticism regarding his conduct and ties to the late disgraced US financier Jeffrey Epstein.
This decision comes in response to increasing pressure concerning his previous connections with the convicted ‘sex offender’ Jeffrey Epstein. In addition to renouncing his titles, the prince is also expected to resign from his membership in the Order of the Garter, indicating a voluntary effort to mitigate the rising public and institutional scrutiny.
In a statement, Andrew remarked that “the ongoing allegations against me” have diverted attention from the responsibilities of his elder brother, King Charles, and the broader endeavors of the British royal family.
“Consequently, I will no longer utilize the title or the honors that have been bestowed upon me. As I have stated before, I firmly deny the allegations made against me,” Andrew expressed in his statement.
