Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal is scheduled to visit the United States on Monday, September 22, to further the renewed trade discussions with the Trump administration in light of elevated tariffs, as stated by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry on Saturday.
This visit comes after a meeting in New Delhi earlier this week, where a US delegation, headed by Assistant US Trade Representative for South and Central Asia Brendan Lynch, engaged in talks with Indian officials.
Goyal will spearhead a delegation to promote discussions aimed at reaching an early, mutually advantageous trade agreement, with a particular emphasis on addressing the issues surrounding the 50% tariffs imposed by the US.
“A team from the United States Trade Representative, led by Assistant USTR Brendan Lynch, conducted meetings at the Ministry of Commerce on September 16 to advance the ongoing negotiations for a trade deal with the US. The discussions were constructive and forward-looking, encompassing various facets of the trade agreement.
It was resolved to enhance efforts to achieve an early conclusion of a mutually beneficial agreement,” stated MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on Friday.
The negotiations are resuming after a halt last month when US President Donald Trump increased tariffs on Indian goods in response to India’s continued acquisition of Russian oil.
Goyal had previously visited Washington in May, where he held discussions with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. The talks in Delhi with the US team marked the first high-level engagement following the 50 percent tariff hike.
