A bus transporting a junior high football team en route to a game crashed on Saturday in the northern part of Pittsburgh, resulting in 21 of the 28 individuals on board being hospitalized.
Authorities reported that 25 junior high students from Aliquippa and three adults were on their way to a game in the nearby area of Gibsonia, as stated by The Associated Press.
The accident took place in Economy Borough, situated approximately 20 miles north of Pittsburgh. Shortly after the incident, the police chief of Economy Borough, Michael O’Brien, indicated that he did not possess information regarding the medical conditions of those who were taken to hospitals.
O’Brien noted that officials discovered the bus had overturned during the crash but had righted itself as the students were evacuating the vehicle.
The police chief further remarked that the tragic accident occurred in a challenging location on the road. “It’s on a bad bend,” O’Brien stated. “An investigation is currently underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.”
In the meantime, a Facebook page dedicated to the Aliquippa junior high football team announced that each player was undergoing evaluation and requested “a thought or prayer for each player or coach that was traveling this morning.”
The reason for the crash remains unknown. Nearby roads were closed as authorities arrived at the scene. The situation is presently under investigation.
