Brazil’s Supreme Court is set to commence the trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro on September 2, following allegations that he conspired to orchestrate a coup after his electoral defeat, as disclosed in a court document on Friday.
A panel of five judges, headed by Justice Cristiano Zanin, will preside over the case, with hearings scheduled from September 2 to September 12, according to the document.
Since August 5, Bolsonaro has been under house arrest. Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who is in charge of the case, indicated that Bolsonaro breached precautionary measures by disseminating information through his three lawmaker sons. Last week, De Moraes relaxed the restrictions, permitting unrestricted visits from family members.
The case has captivated Brazil as it deals with a trade dispute with the United States.
Bolsonaro has garnered support from U.S. President Donald Trump, who has described the prosecution as a “witch hunt” and has connected his decision to impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian imports to Bolsonaro’s legal challenges.
