US President Donald Trump has defended his stringent tariff policy in anticipation of a crucial court hearing that may significantly impact his overall trade strategy.
In a message posted on Truth Social, Donald Trump stated, “To all of my exceptional lawyers who have worked tirelessly to protect our Country, best of luck in America’s major case today. If our Country were unable to defend itself by implementing TARIFFS AGAINST TARIFFS, WE WOULD BE ‘DEAD,’ WITH NO POSSIBILITY OF SURVIVAL OR SUCCESS.”
Trump’s comments were made just hours prior to the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit hearing the Trump administration’s appeal against a lower court ruling that found the president did not possess the authority to impose 10% tariffs on foreign nations under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).
A three-judge panel from the US Court of International Trade had previously halted the extensive tariffs, which impacted most countries, but the Federal Circuit temporarily reinstated them while the legal dispute is being reviewed.
The case, initiated by 12 states and five small businesses, represents a significant examination of a fundamental aspect of Trump’s economic policy.
While the Federal Circuit’s ruling could eventually be appealed to the Supreme Court, the likelihood of a favorable outcome for Trump at the conservative-leaning high court remains uncertain.
