On Wednesday, India reacted to US President Donald Trump’s declaration of a 25% tariff on goods imported from India, asserting that the government will undertake all necessary measures to safeguard our national interests.
This decision has extinguished hopes for a limited trade agreement between the two nations, which had been under discussion for several months.
In an official statement, the Indian government indicated that it had acknowledged the remarks made by the U.S. President and was meticulously examining the potential consequences. “India and the US have been involved in negotiations aimed at finalizing a fair, balanced, and mutually advantageous bilateral trade agreement over the past few months. We remain dedicated to achieving that goal,” the statement conveyed.
Nevertheless, India responded by emphasizing that the government will take all necessary actions to protect our national interests, as has been the case with other trade agreements, including the recent Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement with the UK.
“The Government has noted the statement made by the US President regarding bilateral trade. The Government is analyzing its implications. India and the US have been engaged in negotiations to finalize a fair, balanced, and mutually beneficial bilateral trade agreement over the last few months. We remain committed to that objective. The Government places the highest priority on safeguarding and promoting the welfare of our farmers, entrepreneurs, and MSMEs,” the government stated.
India’s reaction followed President Trump’s announcement on Wednesday that a 25% tariff on imports from India will be implemented starting August 1, citing what he referred to as unfair trade practices and India’s ongoing relations with Russia.
In a statement shared on Truth Social, Trump recognized India as a “friend” but criticized the nation’s elevated tariffs and rigorous non-monetary trade barriers, labeling them as “among the highest in the world” and “obnoxious.”
