A total of thirty-one workers were safely evacuated from an industrial tunnel that is currently under construction in Los Angeles, U.S., following a partial collapse that occurred on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, as reported by the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The collapse took place approximately 9 kilometers from the only entrance of the tunnel, located in an industrial area of the city. Aerial footage captured by local television displayed workers being hoisted through the entrance of the tunnel.
Some workers located on the opposite side of the collapsed section of the tunnel managed to climb over a mound of loose soil that was between 12 to 15 feet high and reached several colleagues on the other side. Subsequently, the workers were transported in groups by a tunnel vehicle to the opening.
Paramedics were assessing the condition of 27 of the workers who had been removed from the tunnel.
The tunnel is being constructed to ultimately facilitate the transportation of wastewater. According to LAFD, it has a width of 18 feet.
Over 100 personnel from LAFD were deployed to the scene, including specialists trained in rescues from confined spaces.
