The passing of Tanya Tyagi occurs in the wake of at least three similar incidents involving Indian students in Canada over the last three months.
In a heartbreaking development, an Indian student named Tanya Tyagi, who was studying at the University of Calgary in Canada, was discovered deceased under suspicious circumstances, as stated in a release from the Consulate General of India in Vancouver on Thursday (June 19).
The consulate conveyed its sympathies to the family and remarked, “We are deeply saddened by the unexpected passing of Ms. Tanya Tyagi, an Indian student at the University of Calgary.”
“The Consulate is coordinating with the authorities and will extend all necessary support to the grieving family. Our sincere condolences and prayers are with the family and friends of the deceased,” the consulate’s statement indicated.
Tyagi was enrolled in a Master’s program in Food Safety and Quality at Calgary University, having previously studied at Jaypee Institute of Information Technology, as reported by News18, referencing her LinkedIn profile.
Fourth mysterious death in three months
Tyagi’s passing marks the fourth such incident involving Indian students in Canada within the last three months.
In April 2025, 21-year-old Vanshika Saini was found dead near a beach in Ottawa after being missing for four days. The High Commission of India in Ottawa confirmed her death, noting that local law enforcement is conducting an investigation. Saini vanished on April 25 after leaving to inspect a rental property. Her phone ceased functioning that evening, and she missed a significant exam the following day, which India Today reported was out of character for her.
Approximately a week earlier, 21-year-old Harsimrat Randhawa, a student at Mohawk College in Hamilton, was tragically killed by a stray bullet while waiting at a bus stop. Hamilton police confirmed that she was caught in the crossfire between two vehicles, according to Business Today.
On April 4, 27-year-old Dharmesh Kathireeya, a native of Gujarat on a work permit, was fatally stabbed by a neighbor in Rockland, Ontario. The alleged assailant reportedly used racial slurs prior to the attack. Kathireeya’s employer, Milano Pizza Rockland, temporarily closed in his honor.
