On Friday, Russia announced that discussions regarding the resolution of various issues stemming from prior American administrations took place with the United States during recent talks in Istanbul.
The Russian foreign ministry stated, as reported by AFP, that “paths to resolving the many annoyances inherited from previous American administrations were discussed.”
The discussions held on Thursday in Istanbul marked a notable thaw in relations between Washington and Moscow, a process initiated in recent weeks by US President Donald Trump, who is also expected to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the near future.
Additionally, Russia proposed to the US the resumption of direct flights between the two nations, which had been suspended three years ago following the onset of Russia’s military actions in Ukraine.
The statement indicated, “It was suggested to the American side to examine the possibility of resuming direct air links.”
The talks were characterized as “substantive and professional,” with an agreement to continue the dialogue.
Furthermore, the statement noted that “joint steps were agreed to ensure the unimpeded financing” of both the Russian and US embassies, and there was a discussion regarding the return of six properties seized by the United States.
The emphasis was placed on the necessity for practical outcomes aimed at fostering improved bilateral relations for the benefit of the citizens of both nations.
On February 18, the US and Russian foreign ministers convened in Saudi Arabia for their first high-level meeting since the commencement of Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine.
