A task force established by the Kremlin to counter external interference announced on Wednesday that Western nations are allegedly preparing to intervene in Russia’s parliamentary elections scheduled for 2026.
According to a document cited by the Russian state news agency TASS and reported by Politico, “The commission notes the active preparations by Western countries to orchestrate attempts to interfere in the elections for the State Duma in 2026.”
The document further stated, “The United States and its allies have already conducted preliminary attempts to interfere in the Russian elections set for 2024.”
In contrast, Moscow has been accused of attempting to influence Romania’s presidential election last year in favor of the pro-Russian independent candidate Călin Georgescu, as well as seeking to sway a presidential election and an EU accession referendum in Moldova in October.
Additionally, in the previous year’s presidential election in Russia, which was marred by a lack of genuine political opposition, President Vladimir Putin reportedly received 87 percent of the votes.
Since 2001, United Russia, the ruling party led by Putin, has been subject to allegations of electoral fraud to sustain its grip on power, with Putin having held the positions of either president or prime minister throughout this entire timeframe.
