Iran expressed on Thursday that Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election presents an opportunity for the United States to reevaluate its previous “incorrect policies.”
Trump, who is anticipated to assume the presidency again in January after defeating US Vice President Kamala Harris in Tuesday’s election, had implemented a “maximum pressure” strategy against Iran during his initial term. Esmaeil Baghaei, a spokesman for the foreign ministry, stated that Iran has endured significant challenges due to the policies and strategies of various US administrations in the past. He remarked that Trump’s election victory offers a moment “to reconsider prior erroneous policies.”
The relationship between Iran and the United States has been contentious since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, which led to the ousting of the Western-supported shah, with tensions escalating during Trump’s first term from 2017 to 2021.
Prior to the announcement of Trump’s victory on Wednesday, Iran had characterized the US election as inconsequential.
“The overarching policies of the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran remain unchanged,” asserted government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani. “The identity of the president is irrelevant. Strategies have already been established to ensure that there is no alteration in the livelihood of the people,” she continued.
During his first term, Trump withdrew the United States from the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement and imposed severe sanctions on the Islamic Republic.
In 2020, during the administration of President Trump, the United States conducted an airstrike at Baghdad airport that resulted in the death of Qasem Soleimani, a highly respected general of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
