According to the United Nations Palestinian refugee agency (UNRWA), more than one million people have been displaced from the city of Rafah in Gaza due to forced displacement.
This small city, located on the southern edge of the Gaza Strip, had been providing shelter to approximately one million Palestinians who had fled Israeli attacks in other parts of the region, as reported by aid groups.
Since early May, the Israeli military has been conducting a limited operation in Rafah with the aim of eliminating Hamas fighters and dismantling infrastructure used by the Palestinian Islamist militant group that governs Gaza.
As a result, civilians have been instructed to relocate to an “expanded humanitarian zone” situated about 20 km (12 miles) away.
However, many Palestinians have expressed concerns about their vulnerability to Israeli attacks regardless of their location, leading them to constantly move within the Gaza Strip in recent months.
UNRWA has highlighted that thousands of families are now seeking refuge in damaged and destroyed facilities in the city of Khan Younis.
Despite facing increasing challenges, the agency continues to provide essential services to these families.
The conditions in Khan Younis are described as unspeakable by UNRWA.
