US Senator Lindsey Graham has sparked controversy with his comparison of the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza to the US decision to drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki to end World War II.
During an interview with NBC News, Graham suggested that Israel should be given the necessary bombs to bring an end to the war. He argued that just as the US made the right decision to use nuclear weapons to end the war, Israel should be supported in its efforts to protect itself as a Jewish state.
Graham’s remarks have come at a time when US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has expressed strong opposition to Israel’s offensive in Gaza. Blinken has warned that without a resolution and a post-war governance plan, Israel could face a prolonged insurgency in the Hamas-held enclave. Despite these warnings, Israel has continued its operation in Rafah, the last stronghold of Hamas in Gaza.
During the interview, Graham also placed blame on Hamas for the civilian casualties in Gaza, stating that it is impossible to prevent such deaths as long as Hamas uses civilians as human shields. He condemned Hamas for putting innocent lives at risk and emphasized the importance of not rewarding such behavior.
It is clear that Senator Graham’s comments have sparked a heated debate regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict and the use of military force. The situation in Gaza remains tense, and finding a peaceful resolution continues to be a challenge
Graham has a history of expressing contentious views on the conflicts in the Middle East. In December 2023, he advised President Joe Biden to take military action against Iran, as reported by the Independent newspaper.
“I have been advocating for six months now… strike Iran. They have exposed oil fields and the Revolutionary Guard headquarters that are visible from space. Erase it from the map,” he stated during an interview with Fox News.
