The African Union has expressed its strong condemnation of the Israeli military’s recent actions in Rafah, southern Gaza.
The AU Commission chief, Moussa Faki Mahamat, firmly denounces the expansion of the war into the Rafah crossing and calls on the international community to put an end to this dangerous escalation.
Mr. Faki expresses deep concern about Israel’s ongoing conflict in Gaza, which has led to numerous deaths and widespread destruction of the basic necessities of human life.
He urges global coordination and collective action to bring an immediate halt to this deadly situation. Meanwhile, negotiations for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas continue in Cairo, while civilians in Rafah, many of them displaced, bear the brunt of the conflict.
Israel, after a four-day closure in response to a rocket attack, has reopened the Kerem Shalom border crossing for humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Furthermore, the Erez border crossing between Israel and northern Gaza, closed since the start of the war, is now also accessible for aid deliveries to the Palestinian territory.
The United Nations and the United States, a strong ally of Israel, have both condemned the closure of these vital crossings, as they are crucial in providing much-needed support to the civilian population facing the threat of famine.
