At least two individuals lost their lives and over 20 others sustained injuries in a knife assault at a hospital in China’s Yunnan province on Tuesday, according to state media reports citing official sources.
The perpetrator was reportedly apprehended at a nearby wellness center.
China’s Xinhua news agency officially described the incident as a “violent, vicious assault” that transpired at the Zhenxiong County People’s Hospital in Zhaotong city.
The assault, labeled as a “violent incident” by state media Xinhua, unfolded at a local hospital in Zhenxiong county, as reported by the news agency, with authorities currently gathering additional details.
Guizhou TV mentioned that “multiple videos from the scene depict a suspect being detained by law enforcement in a wellness center,” as per CNN.
Officials have not yet issued a statement regarding the arrest of the suspect.
Meanwhile, a witness informed local online Red Star News that medical professionals were among the injured individuals.
This occurrence marks the most recent knife attack in China, with the nation experiencing a series of mass stabbings in public areas in recent times.
In 2023, a knife attack outside a kindergarten in Guangdong province resulted in the deaths of six individuals, as reported by CNN.
Three individuals were killed, and six others were wounded in a knife attack at a kindergarten in southeast Jianxi province in August 2022.
In February of that year, a man carried out a brutal knife attack at a primary school in central Hubei province, resulting in the deaths of eight students and injuries to two others.
