Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, traveled to China on Sunday for an unexpected visit to the country, which is the second-largest market for the electric vehicle company.
This information was reported by news agency Reuters, citing two individuals familiar with the situation.
Musk’s trip to China follows a recent delay in his visit to India due to Tesla commitments.
He had plans to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and announce the company’s entry into the Indian market.
Currently, Musk is in Beijing aiming to meet with high-ranking Chinese officials to discuss the implementation of Full-Self Driving (FSD) software in China.
He is also seeking approval to transfer data collected in China overseas to enhance algorithms for autonomous driving technologies, as reported by Reuters, citing one of the sources.
In response to a question on the social media platform X, Musk mentioned that Tesla might introduce FSD to Chinese customers “very soon.” Interestingly, Musk’s visit to China has not been widely publicized.
According to Reuters, Tesla has been storing all data gathered by its Chinese fleet in Shanghai since 2021, complying with Chinese regulations, and has not transferred any data back to the United States.
Although Tesla introduced FSD, the most advanced version of its Autopilot software, four years ago, it has not yet made it available in China, despite customer requests.
