Taiwan’s eastern county of Hualien, which was struck by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake on April 3, experienced numerous aftershocks late Monday and early Tuesday.
Fortunately, only minor damage was reported, and there were no casualties.
The major chipmaker TSMC confirmed that its operations were not impacted by the seismic activity.
The Central Weather Administration attributed the approximately 180 earthquakes to aftershocks from the initial quake.
Seismological experts warned of potential further aftershocks, urging residents to remain vigilant.
Despite the seismic activity, TSMC’s operations remained unaffected, with shares even rising on the Taipei stock exchange.
The government in Hualien took precautionary measures, suspending work and school for the day due to road closures caused by rockfalls.
In 2016, a devastating earthquake in southern Taiwan claimed the lives of over 100 individuals, whereas a seismic event measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale resulted in the tragic loss of over 2,000 lives in 1999.
