On Thursday, US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, convened for a significant meeting in South Korea, where both leaders recognized their differences yet expressed a desire to enhance their relationship moving forward.
Trump remarked, “We have a great relationship. Xi is a tough negotiator,” and he emphasized that the two nations will develop “fantastic” ties from this point onward.
In reply, Xi stated, “China and the US can jointly shoulder our responsibility as major countries and collaborate to achieve more significant and tangible outcomes for the benefit of our two nations and the entire world.”
Expressing his pleasure at meeting Trump, Xi further noted, “We have not always seen eye-to-eye, and that is normal.” The Chinese leader acknowledged that it is typical for major economic powers to experience tensions and asserted that the US and China should now focus on resolving these differences and work together as “partners and friends.”
