On Monday, Russia announced that Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio engaged in a “constructive” dialogue as part of the preparations for an upcoming summit between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump.
These discussions followed a phone call last Thursday, during which Putin and Trump agreed to convene their second summit of the year in Budapest, Hungary.
Both parties confirmed that Lavrov and Rubio would collaborate in advance of the meeting.
According to a brief statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry, “A constructive discussion took place regarding possible concrete steps to implement the understandings reached during the October 16 telephone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump,” as reported by Reuters.
No additional details regarding the conversation were provided.
Russia has expressed its desire for the summit to address a potential peace settlement in Ukraine and to explore avenues for enhancing bilateral relations between Moscow and Washington.
