Severe rainfall in Tokyo, Japan, has disrupted daily life as the change in weather led to flooding on roadways and the suspension of rail and air traffic. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that the city experienced 12 centimeters of rain within just one hour.
According to local media, one individual has lost their life due to the heavy rains, following the collapse of several stacked containers at a port in Tokyo’s Ota Ward. Additionally, one person sustained injuries as a result of this incident.
Air traffic control and various ground services at Haneda Airport in Tokyo were suspended due to lightning, which prevented aircraft from taking off. Railway services were also temporarily halted, affecting the bullet train and other lines in the area.
The Yazawa River overflowed in Setagaya Ward, while the Tachiai River breached its banks in Shinagawa Ward. At one point, the Setagaya Ward office issued evacuation recommendations to over 1,200 households.
Residents in Tokyo reported flooding on the streets, leading to traffic congestion, with some even claiming to have witnessed hail. The Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings indicated that at one time, more than 7,000 homes in Tokyo were without electricity. By late Thursday, power had been restored to the majority of these homes.
Authorities have cautioned about the possibility of further thunderstorms overnight and have advised residents to remain indoors, refrain from unnecessary travel, and keep abreast of weather updates.
