Tennis icon John McEnroe offered a critical perspective on Daniil Medvedev following his intense first-round loss to Benjamin Bonzi at the US Open 2025. Reflecting on the Russian player’s situation, McEnroe expressed skepticism regarding Medvedev’s ability to bounce back from his ongoing difficulties.
Medvedev’s dismal performance in the 2025 Grand Slam tournaments concluded with the US Open, which failed to provide him with any solace. The 29-year-old was eliminated in the first round of the last three Grand Slam events, and his swift decline has raised concerns among fans and analysts about his future prospects.
In addition to his loss at the US Open, Medvedev’s behavior after the defeat garnered significant media attention. He appeared frustrated after being unable to secure a comeback from two sets and a match point down, ultimately losing in five sets and subsequently engaging in a racquet-smashing outburst.
McEnroe voiced significant concern for Medvedev’s situation. A seven-time Grand Slam champion, McEnroe commented on Medvedev’s match and shared the same worries as many fans and analysts.
“You know, he already has tapped out, like months ago,” McEnroe remarked during the Nothing Major Show. “I’ve been worried about his level because he doesn’t know what the hell he’s doing at this point for a guy that good on hard courts.”
The American noted Medvedev’s angry outburst following the loss to Bonzi as indicative of deeper issues affecting his game. “This sort of cemented it, like how little confidence he has in anything,” McEnroe added, while commending Bonzi’s poise under pressure.
As a veteran of the sport, McEnroe offered valuable guidance for Medvedev but also expressed his doubts about the player’s current state.
“He’s got to get his act together. I’m not sure he can. I think he’s so lost right now,” he confessed, mentioning that he had actually hoped for a Medvedev victory during the match.
In conclusion, McEnroe stated, “There’s something about the US Open that brings out the best and worst of him.”
