Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maldives President Ibrahim Muizzu reiterated their dedication to combating climate change and environmental degradation by planting saplings together this evening in Malé.
The leaders endorsed the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ (A Tree for Mother) initiative, along with the Maldives Government’s Pledge of 5 Million Tree Plantation, which aims to bolster sustainability efforts.
“India and the Maldives are fully aware of the challenges posed by climate change and environmental degradation. We are committed to taking all necessary actions to enhance sustainability. This evening in Malé, President Muizzu and I planted saplings, thereby reinforcing the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ (a tree for Mother) initiative and the Maldives Government’s Pledge of 5 Million Tree Plantation,” PM Modi stated in a post on X.
Modi arrived in Malé this morning to a warm reception, with President Muizzu and several senior ministers from his government welcoming the prime minister at Velena International Airport, highlighting the significance that Malé places on this visit.
Shortly thereafter, Modi received a vibrant ceremonial welcome and a guard of honour at the renowned Republic Square.
PM Modi also declared a Rs 4,850 crore line of credit to the island nation. He mentioned that both countries will strive to finalize a bilateral investment treaty and that discussions for a free trade agreement have already commenced.
