A man who recently returned to Pakistan with his family has admitted to murdering his daughter due to his disapproval of her TikTok activities. As reported by the Pakistani news outlet Geo News, Anwar ul-Haq shot his daughter on a street in Quetta, Balochistan, on Tuesday.
During initial questioning, the suspect claimed that an unidentified assailant was responsible for his US-born daughter’s death. However, he later confessed to the crime. Police investigator Zohaib Mohsin informed local media, “Our investigation has revealed that the family objected to her clothing, lifestyle, and social interactions.” He further stated, “We have her phone, which is locked, and we are exploring all angles, including the possibility of an honour killing.”
The report indicates that the family had recently returned to Balochistan after residing in the United States for approximately 25 years. Authorities have noted that the suspect holds US citizenship. According to Geo News, Haq alleged that his daughter began producing “objectionable” content on TikTok while living in the United States.
In connection with the case, the uncle of the victim has also been arrested. Haq has been charged with murder, and the investigation is ongoing.
The family has chosen not to comment on this tragic event. It is important to highlight that over 54 million individuals in Pakistan use TikTok. In recent years, the Pakistani government has frequently blocked the app, citing the need for content moderation.
Pakistan’s conservative society often expresses concerns regarding what it deems “obscene content” on social media. Recently, some platforms have been observed complying with requests from Pakistani authorities to remove specific content.
