Russian President Vladimir Putin extended his congratulations to US President-elect Donald Trump just hours before Trump’s inauguration in Washington, expressing his willingness to engage in discussions regarding Ukraine and nuclear arms with the incoming administration.
During a meeting of Russia’s Security Council, Putin articulated his desire for a “long-lasting peace” in Ukraine, emphasizing the need for more than a temporary ceasefire.
As Trump prepares to be sworn in for a historic second term as President of the United States on Monday, he has committed to reaching out to both parties in an effort to swiftly resolve the nearly three-year conflict.
In televised remarks, Putin stated, “We are also open to dialogue with the new US administration on the Ukrainian conflict,” as reported by AFP.
He further underscored that the objective of resolving the situation should not merely be a short truce, but rather a sustainable peace that respects the legitimate interests of all parties involved. “We will, of course, fight for the interests of Russia, for the interests of the Russian people,” Putin affirmed.
Last year, Trump remarked that the Ukraine-Russia conflict was “dying to be settled” and indicated his intention to communicate with both Moscow and Kyiv to avert a potential “World War III.”
Putin expressed his approval of Trump’s commitment to preventing a third world war, stating, “We certainly welcome this attitude and congratulate the president-elect of the United States on taking office.”
