Hezbollah appoints Naim Qassem as its new leader.

A deputy leader has been elevated to a higher position following the Israeli assassinations, which created a leadership void in the Lebanon-based group.

Hezbollah has declared Naim Qassem as its newly appointed leader.

Qassem, who was elevated from his role as deputy leader, was announced on Tuesday to succeed Hassan Nasrallah as the secretary-general of the Lebanon-based militant organization.

Nasrallah was killed in Beirut in late September as a result of an Israeli airstrike. Additionally, numerous other high-ranking Hezbollah officials have been targeted since Israel intensified its focus on the group during that month.

In an official statement, Hezbollah indicated that Qassem was chosen for this role due to his “commitment to the principles and objectives of Hezbollah.”

The organization further expressed its hope that “God Almighty will guide him in this honorable task of leading Hezbollah and its Islamic resistance.”

Vacuum

The assassination of Nasrallah, a figure who represented the Lebanese Shia movement to both his supporters and the broader region, has created a significant leadership void within a group that had already suffered extensive losses due to months of targeted Israeli strikes.

Nasrallah’s cousin, Hashem Safieddine, was previously considered the leading candidate to succeed him at the helm of the Iran-affiliated Hezbollah; however, he was killed in an Israeli attack on Beirut shortly after Nasrallah’s death.

Qassem, aged 71, has frequently been identified as Hezbollah’s “number two.” He is one of the founding religious scholars of the organization, established in the early 1980s, and possesses a long-standing background in Shia political activism.

He was the highest-ranking Hezbollah official to maintain a public presence after Nasrallah retreated from the public eye following the 2006 conflict with Israel.

In the wake of the former leader’s assassination, Qassem has delivered three televised speeches, utilizing a more formal Arabic style compared to the colloquial Lebanese dialect preferred by Nasrallah.

On September 30, he conveyed a resolute message, affirming Hezbollah’s preparedness to confront Israel and achieve victory.

Christophe Barraud, recognized as the ‘world’s most accurate economist,’ has forecasted a victory for Donald Trump in the upcoming U.S. presidential election scheduled for November 5. Barraud, the head of Market Securities Monaco and a leading figure in Bloomberg’s economic rankings for 11 of the last 12 years, supports his prediction through various indicators, including signals from financial markets and betting platforms. In a recent update on X (formerly Twitter), Barraud remarked, “Analyzing various metrics such as betting markets, polls, forecasts from election modellers, and financial market trends, the most likely outcomes indicate a GOP clean sweep.” His analysis implies that Republicans are likely to gain control of the Senate and potentially the House, although the latter remains less certain. Barraud anticipates that a Trump presidency would lead to short-term economic growth, projecting GDP increases between 2.1% and 2.3% by 2025. However, he cautions that tax reductions may be counterbalanced by long-term challenges, such as a rising federal deficit in the absence of new revenue streams. In the event of a Trump victory, the economist foresees significant fluctuations in the bond market, predicting that yields on the 10-year Treasury bond could escalate to 4.5 percent, possibly reaching as high as 5 percent as Trump’s policies are implemented. This outlook diverges from the prevailing consensus, which anticipates slower growth rates of 2.6 percent in 2024 and 1.8 percent in 2025. Adding to the mix of predictions, statistician Nate Silver expresses a strong intuition that Trump will secure a win, estimating the probability at 53.1 percent. Conversely, historian Allan Lichtman, known for his accurate election predictions, asserts that Vice President Kamala Harris will emerge victorious based on his ‘Keys to the White House’ model.
