According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), a powerful earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale occurred off the central coast of Peru on Friday.
The epicenter of the tremor was located 8.8 kilometers (5.5 miles) away from the Atiquipa district.
Initially, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre stated that there was no danger, but later issued a warning about the potential for tsunami waves reaching up to three meters in height along certain coastlines.
