The Liberal Party of Canada, led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, has encountered a setback in the lead-up to the upcoming national election.
They suffered a defeat in the by-election for the Toronto-St Paul seat, which is traditionally considered a stronghold for the Liberal Party.
This loss marks the first time in over three decades that the party has been unsuccessful in this constituency.
In the 2021 elections, the Liberal Party secured 49 percent of the votes in the constituency, but this figure dropped to 40 percent in the by-elections.
The Conservative Party candidate emerged victorious in the Toronto-St Paul by-election with a vote share of 42 percent, delivering a surprise blow to the ruling party.
In response to the defeat, Justin Trudeau acknowledged that the outcome was unexpected and pledged to diligently address the concerns of the voters.
