The Indian embassy in Kenya has released a warning regarding the ongoing unrest in the country.
The advisory urges Indian citizens to be cautious, limit unnecessary movement, and avoid areas affected by protests and violence until the situation stabilizes. It is recommended to stay updated through local news sources and the Mission’s official website and social media platforms.
The advisory was prompted by violent clashes between protesters and law enforcement in various Kenyan cities, including Nairobi. These clashes were triggered by the approval of a controversial finance bill by the Kenyan parliament, which includes tax hikes that worsen the country’s existing cost-of-living crisis.
Eyewitnesses reported security forces using tear gas, water cannons, and firing warning shots to disperse protesters, who responded by throwing stones. Riot police were deployed around key government buildings during the parliamentary debate on the tax bill. Despite the bill’s passage and the parliament’s adjournment, protesters continued to gather outside these buildings.
The protests highlight the dissatisfaction among Kenyan citizens, who not only oppose the tax increases but also demand the resignation of President William Ruto. The country is facing a severe economic crisis, and the new tax measures have intensified public anger and discontent.
