An air force pilot from Britain lost his life when a Spitfire aircraft crashed into a field in eastern England last Saturday, according to the RAF and police.
The incident occurred during a Battle of Britain commemoration at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire, as reported by The Guardian.
Expressing his condolences, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stated on social media, “It is heartbreaking to hear about the untimely death of an RAF pilot in this tragic incident. My thoughts go out to the pilot’s family and dear ones.”
The Lincolnshire Police confirmed that the pilot, who remains unidentified, was the only person on board the aircraft and was pronounced dead at the crash site.
There were no additional injuries reported from the accident, and investigations are currently underway to determine the cause.
RAF Coningsby issued a statement saying, “With deep regret, we announce the passing of an RAF pilot in a tragic mishap near RAF Coningsby today. The pilot’s family has been notified, and we kindly request that their privacy be respected during this challenging period.”
