The Polish Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, announced on Thursday that he had received threats following the assassination attempt on the Prime Minister of Slovakia.
Reports indicated that his security protection would be increased. Slovakia’s Prime Minister, Robert Fico, was shot five times at close range the day before, leading to widespread international condemnation and calls for a de-escalation of political tensions.
The atmosphere in Polish politics has been highly charged in recent times, with incidents such as the murder of a liberal mayor of Gdansk in 2019.
The State Protection Service, responsible for safeguarding important figures in Poland, is said to be enhancing Tusk’s protection following these disturbing events.
A spokesperson for the agency refused to disclose details, stressing the confidentiality of their operations. Interior minister Tomasz Siemoniak mentioned that while analyzing the situation and learning from it, the specifics of their actions will not be discussed publicly.
