The expansion of Palestinian rights at the General Assembly, which would grant Palestine full membership in the UN, will once again face opposition from the US.
Nate Evans, spokesperson for the US mission to the United Nations, disclosed this information prior to the upcoming vote on Friday.
As per Nate Evans, President Joe Biden envisions achieving peace in the region by establishing a two-state solution, ensuring Israel’s security, and promoting equality between Palestinians and Israeli settlers in terms of freedom and dignity.
Regarding the resolution, Evans emphasized that the United States firmly believes that unilateral actions at the United Nations and on the ground will not contribute to the aforementioned goal. Hence, the United States will vote ‘no’ on the General Assembly resolution and encourages other member states to do the same.
Furthermore, the US has confirmed that it will once again vote against Palestine’s bid for full membership at the UN.
If the US General Assembly’s resolution is passed, Palestine will have the right to propose suggestions and amendments independently, as well as submit procedural measures such as raising points of order and requesting votes on specific proposals.
The UN General Assembly is scheduled to vote on Palestine’s full membership bid on Friday, May 10.
Palestine’s envoy will present the request, with the draft requesting the UN Security Council to reconsider the matter favorably. If approved, Palestine would enjoy the same privileges as an official member, including voting rights.
Despite the majority of states supporting the draft, the United States vetoed a UNSC vote last month that would have granted Palestine full membership in the UN.
The Israeli occupation’s ambassador to the UN opposes the resolution, asserting that it would not alter the current status quo.
Gilad Erdan stated on Monday that should it be approved, he anticipates the United States will cease all funding to the U.N. and its institutions, in compliance with American legislation.
