Andrew Tate, a prominent online influencer, was detained in Romania and served with an arrest warrant from British authorities, as confirmed by his spokesperson on Tuesday.
Tate, aged 37, along with his brother Tristan Tate, were held for 24 hours on Monday due to allegations of sexual aggression in a case from the U.K. dating back to 2012-2015, according to Mateea Petrescu, the spokesperson.
The Bucharest Court of Appeal is expected to make a crucial decision on Tuesday regarding the execution of the warrants issued by the Westminster Magistrates Court in the U.K.
Despite four women reporting Tate to U.K. authorities for alleged sexual violence and physical abuse, the Crown Prosecution Service opted not to pursue criminal charges against him. Subsequently, the alleged victims resorted to crowdfunding to finance their legal expenses for a civil case against him.
Expressing their frustration, the victims stated on their campaign page, “It’s our one remaining route to hold him accountable,” after the U.K. authorities declined to prosecute Tate despite the evidence provided. In response to the charges, Petrescu mentioned that the Tate brothers deny the allegations and are disappointed by the revival of such serious claims without substantial new evidence.
Apart from the U.K. case, Tate faces charges in Romania for rape, human trafficking, and involvement in a criminal gang for exploiting women sexually. He, along with his brother and two Romanian women, was arrested near Bucharest in December 2022. All four were formally indicted by Romanian prosecutors in June last year and have refuted the accusations.
Andrew Tate, known for his massive following of 8.9 million on the social media platform X, has consistently maintained that the Romanian prosecutors lack evidence against him and have conspired politically to silence him.
Previously, Tate has been banned from several major social media platforms due to his misogynistic views and hate speech.
